Termites are wood destroying insects that are a concern in any home with a wooden structure or components. Failure to properly identify and deal with their presence can lead to serious damage to the structure and other wooden components of the house and create the need for expensive repairs. They are rightly named as the silent destroyers as their existence cannot be found until the wooden components start to perish. Termites consume dead plants, animal dung, soil and any form of wood. Termites can lay up to 10,000 eggs in a week. They enlarge rapidly and are known for wrecking furniture and buildings in a short span of time. The Subterranean termites that are extensive in India are extremely destructive. They build tunnels to wooden structures, and then burrow into those structures to obtain food. Any wood or cellulose-containing material constitutes termite food, and given time to do so, theychumble until nothing but a shell is left. Termites avoid light and air, so they build their colonies where no oneis likely to stumble upon them. Homes that are damp and have leaks are more prone to termite attacks. Termites are also attracted to books and libraries built in our homes. Expunging these vicious insects is highly necessary.
